Owls Weekly Update 18.1.25
This week the whole school joined in with an 'art and maths day'. Nursery also took part. First, we looked at paintings by Piet Mondrian. We talked about the colours and shapes within the paintings. As part of our early morning work, the children used Numicon to create pictures and patterns. When placing the Numicon on the board, they had to work out which colour/number piece they needed to fit in the space (lots of counting opportunities and problem-solving). As the children placed the pieces of Numicon on their board, they created unique artwork.
We also learnt how to print using various shapes. We used primary colours (red, yellow and blue) to create our own artwork. We talked about the shapes, flat edges, corners and curves. We have put up our artwork within our classroom entrance. Please come in and have a look at the beginning of the day.
This week we have been reading 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff', a traditional tale. We have been rehearsing the story throughout the week and joining in with the repetitive parts of the story. As well as using the book to tell the story, the children have had the story retold to them using small work characters.
We have also been using wooden blocks to build a bridge for the goats to go over the river. The children were supported to work with another child to create a bridge. The nursery staff modelled how to talk and share ideas, how to listen and respond to a friend and what they could do if there is a problem or conflict e.g 'I've got a good idea, we could both put the brick on'/ 'you could have a turn, and then I can have a turn'. They responded well to this challenge and created some amazing bridges.
