In accordance with the Department for Education's guidance, we aim to actively promote British Values at Roman Way. The aim is to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is 'right' and 'wrong', all people living in England are subject to its law. 

At Roman Way, we support our children to become inclusive and caring citizens through a culturally rich and diverse education. We are committed to being an anti-racist school. We promote the core British values through our school values: 'Ready,' Respectful' and 'Safe'. We actively seek opportunities through our curriculum to drive these concepts, particularly in RE, PSHE and assemblies.

Democracy

At Roman Way, we have a peer-elected school council with members from each class from Year 1- 4.  By participating in school council meetings, pupils gain an understanding of democracy. The school council members represent the views of all children. They help in identifying solutions to issues around the school and support in making decisions about activities and events in line with the children's interests. The school council meets with the local town council annually to gain an understanding of their role in the community.

There are ongoing opportunities for all pupils to vote in class. For example, they may vote for their favourite books to read in class or vote when choosing activities. With the help of the school council, we continually make improvements to our routines, learning support and environment.

Rule of Law

Our school values 'Ready', Respectful and 'Safe' are discussed in assemblies and in class at the start of every term. These are referred to frequently and threaded through everything we do.  Children are encouraged to voice their concerns around safety in school, which has enabled leaders to continue to maintain a safe environment for all pupils. We teach and promote 'Zones of Regulation' to support pupils' understanding of their feelings and how this affects their behaviour. Through this, pupils are encouraged to learn and practise self-regulation strategies. Children are encouraged to use and build a bank of emotional vocabulary that enables them to express themselves and have a better understanding of emotional literacy. Our therapeutic behaviour approach encourages children to learn the differences between right and wrong and learn from their mistakes. 

Individual Liberty

Children are encouraged to respect and value different beliefs, religions, families and cultures through the curriculum. Assemblies promote an understanding and acceptance of different make-ups of families. We seek to promote children's self-esteem and self-acceptance. We celebrate differences with the message that every person is unique and special.

Children are encouraged to be independent from a young age and are encouraged to take part in a range of activities and clubs. Celebration assemblies are held weekly where achievements are acknowledged and celebrated. 

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

The Roman Way values include 'Respect'. Assemblies promote respect for different beliefs, religions, families and cultures. As part of the RE curriculum, children are taught about how different religious festivals are celebrated. Children have opportunities to take part in visits to different places of worship.

Aspirations Week is planned every year where we welcome visitors into school from a wide range of professions and children are encouraged to ask questions and reflect on their own aspirations. This week aims to educate children around stereotypical beliefs and, in turn, promotes diversity and equality.

Through assemblies, children gain a better understanding of the diverse needs within our communities and become aware of the prejudice and injustices that some groups have suffered, e.g. neuro-diversity, LGBT, black history, powerful women etc. We teach tolerance, respect and acceptance of each other.
